Ranee Zara B. Monsanto, MD

PhD Student

Ranee is a graduate student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program at The Ohio State University. A board-certified physician from the Philippines, she focuses on uncovering the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders to improve care and treatment for Filipino patients. She obtained her BS in Microbiology from the University of Santo Tomas, her MD from Far Eastern University – NRMF, and an MS in Molecular Medicine from St. Luke’s Medical Center - College of Medicine in the Philippines. During her research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital – Harvard Medical School, she investigated the role of neuroinflammation in X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP) and examined mechanisms of neuronal death in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using human brain tissues, mouse models, and in vitro systems. She joined the Wilson and Harari labs to deepen her understanding of neurodegeneration and cellular senescence in age-related dementia, with a particular focus on the retromer complex and glial biology. Outside the lab, she enjoys reading, journaling, café-hopping, visiting bookstores, and exploring museums
